I'd venture to say the sole reason the mints keep churning out this outdated coin is the $.99 sales gimmick - you know items that cost $19.99 or $29.99, making it seem like stuff costs $10 less than what it really does at first blush. Even people who are wise to this ruse fall prey to it. Dumping the cent would negate this ploy; how would you get change?
