Musicians: Leave Us Out Of Your Torture Sessions

Rockers to Press Obama on Music Torture

"Reprieve, a British human rights law group that represents over 30 Guantanamo Bay detainees, is planning to work with musicians to lobby President-elect Barack Obama to end the practice of sonic torture by military interrogators.
Earlier this month, Reprieve and the U.K. Musicians Union launched Zero dB, a "silent protest" over the use of music in interrogations. According to Reprieve, many of its clients have been subjected to hours of music played at deafening volume -- sometime for days or even weeks on end. And the BBC has reported on a particularly insidious practice: using the theme songs from theme songs to Sesame Street and Barney to break the will of prisoners."

"If we need that extra push over the cliff..."

Every time I hear about music as punishment, I think of Noriega, when US troops had him trapped in a monastery or wherever and blared non-stop rock music around the place for days. The press thought that was harmless and charming somehow. And focusing on that made it easier to ignore the hundreds (if not thousands) of civilians that we killed in neighborhoods around the place, just to get this onetime former CIA crony of ours.

When I think back to those days - Panama and Grenada - I can't help thinking that the invasion of Iraq couldn't have happened without those trial runs, and how readily Americans were ok with what we did there.
