Your Papers, Schnell

This is not good news. No one should be fooled by explaining this away as stopping illegal immigrants.
If these "agents" are foreigners that worsens the problem and increases the possibility of violence by orders of magnitude, because there are still some american men who won't stand for it.

Homeland Security Assuming Broad Powers, Turning Vast Swaths Of US Into "Constitution Free Zone"

"You’re driving along a remote, dusty road, when suddenly you come upon a border patrol checkpoint. There, agents demand to see your identity papers, and search your car. You are taken by surprise, because you know you haven’t wandered across the Texas-Mexico border. In fact, you’re quite sure of that, because you’re driving through rural Wisconsin countryside west of Green Bay. Even the Canadian border is more than 90 miles away."

You have to wonder whether illegal immigration is really such a problem that it warrents this invasion of privacy. Clearly it isn't.

Besides, if curbing illegal immigration is really the purpose of these searches, this hit-or-miss method is a pretty inefficient way to do it. Why not pass some tough laws against employers who hire illegal immigrants, as Arizona (I believe) has done.

Good points. There's something rotten about how they're going about this and it doesn't bode well at all.
