That Heroine At New Life Church

Not many of us would have had the guts to do what she did. Think about this for a minute - last week that killer went to a missionary dormitory and murdered two people and twelve hours later showed up at the New Life Church intending to seriously up his body count.

This time he was armed with a semi auto rifle, two 9 mm pistols and what police say was around a thousand rounds of ammo. He had a couple more guns in his car, just in case. This is a meg-church on a Sunday and was full of people. There's no way of telling how many people would have been slaughtered, and he had already fired around forty rounds and killed two more kids in the parking lot. People suspected he could have easily shot a hundred. This is what Jeanne Assam faced as a volunteer security guard.

This woman is devout and was weak from days of fasting. She could have hid, protecting herself. But armed only with a 9 mm pistol herself she faced this guy and shot him three times. A woman armed with only a handgun took down a guy spraying the building with a rifle. This is how she put it:
"I heard shots fired. It was chaos. There were a lot of people in the church," she described.
"The halls cleared out, and I saw him coming through the doors. I took cover, waited for him to get closer, came out of cover and identified myself, engaged him, took him down," she said."

The fact that he supposedly ended it himself with a bullet in the brain doesn't diminish the extraordinary bravery that this woman showed under extreme circumstances.

Did you see the news reports that she had previously been fired from a police department? I think it was Minneapolis. It was over a minor confrontation she had with a bus driver - she lied to her supervisor about it but it was caught on tape.

I could be all "it was god's plan" but then I couldn't call myself an atheist.

God, its nice to have a story like this every once in a while. Some one who actually "does" something, takes action, steps up. Good post.

Yes I saw that debbie. Normally I jump at any chance to mock xtianity and the peanut brains that embrace it, and usually I automatically assume the conspiratorial aspects of most of these shooting incidents.
None of that mattered to me with this - whether she was an xtian nut or jewish or whatever. Didn't matter if the gunman was a programmed manchurian candidate or some snapped loser. She is one brave person.

expat, you bet. There was another aspect to this that was very relevent, the gun control angle, but nothing should dilute praise for what this woman accomplished.
