Wild October

Well this month charged out of the gate and it doesn't look like it's going to slow down any time soon.

*Iraq is boiling hot with violence - 21 americans dead since saturday, and as usual that count is probably low as they refuse to include servicepeople who die in transit from a battlefield or who die later from injuries. Meanwhile, evacuation plans have been drawn up for a possible rapid and comprehensive escape from that country:
"Pentagon and U.S. Central Command contingency planners, fully expecting a major insurgent offensive against U.S. forces in Iraq that will result in a mandatory U.S. military withdrawal, have already identified evacuation staging locations, including from the grounds of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad's Green Zone and Baghdad International Airport. Other evacuation points reportedly include major hotels and U.S. military bases in Iraq. It is planned that evacuees will be airlifted by plane and helicopters to U.S. Navy ships in the Gulf, Kuwait, Jordan, and Germany."

*Karl Rove promised an "October surprise" - a couple of weeks ago he mentioned to staffers that they had nothing to worry about in the upcoming Diebold selection process. What he meant by that is anyone's guess.

*For whatever reason, here we go with the damn school shootings again.

*Preperations for a war on Iran have continued at warp speed. The UN will meet about sanctions next week.
"As reports circulate of a sharp debate within the White House over possible US military action against Iran and its nuclear enrichment facilities, The Nation has learned that the Bush Administration and the Pentagon have moved up the deployment of a major "strike group" of ships, including the nuclear aircraft carrier Eisenhower as well as a cruiser, destroyer, frigate, submarine escort and supply ship, to head for the Persian Gulf, just off Iran's western coast. This information follows a report in the current issue of Time magazine, both online and in print, that a group of ships capable of mining harbors has received orders to be ready to sail for the Persian Gulf by October 1."
Gary Hart at HuffPo certainly believes we'll wage war on a country that threatens nobody. As do this blogger, this one, the russians, Mark Morford, and me.

*Things are awfully mixed up about this war business. Loyal bushbot senator Frist comes to his senses and thinks the US approach in Afghanistan needs to be changed and the democrats turn into warmongers.

*We're watching Foley's Mastergate eat the repugs alive as the scandal threatens to go very wide and deep indeed.
"WMR has learned from informed sources in the Justice Department that the salacious e-mails from Rep. Mark Foley were leaked to ABC News by career Justice Department prosecutors and FBI agents who are incensed that Attorneys General John Ashcroft and Alberto Gonzales covered up the House page scandal for political reasons. The back story of Pagegate is that there was a criminal conspiracy by the top political leadership of the Justice Department to cover up the predatory activities of Foley and other GOP members of Congress since at least 2003 and, likely, as early as 2001."
It looks as though this expose is going to involve Jeb Bush and certain media figures from the Florida area, perhaps a certain pill popping sex trade enthusiast.

And we're not even done with the first week yet.
